Shorshe Ilish Recipe

Shorshe Ilish is a popular Bengali fish curry made with mustard seeds and hilsa fish. Here is a simple recipe to make Shorshe Ilish:

4 pieces of Hilsa fish
1/2 cup yellow mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2-3 green chilies
1 tablespoon mustard oil
Water

Soak the mustard seeds in water for 30 minutes.
Grind the mustard seeds with 1-2 green chilies and a little water to make a fine paste.
Clean and wash the hilsa fish pieces and rub them with turmeric and salt. Keep aside.
Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces till they turn golden brown. Remove from the pan and keep aside.
In the same pan, add the mustard paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, sugar and 1 cup of water. Mix well.
Cook the mixture on low flame till the raw smell of mustard goes away and the gravy thickens.
Add the fried fish pieces to the gravy and mix well. Add some more water if required.
Cover the pan and let it simmer on low heat for 5-7 minutes.
Add some chopped green chilies and serve hot with steamed rice.
